The Government will also no longer mandate the wearing of face masks anywhere from next Thursday and they will be scrapped in classrooms from tomorrow.


  • Boris Johnson told MPs that people are no longer being asked to work from home and, from Thursday next week when Plan B measures lapse, mandatory Covid certification will end.
  • The Prime Minister also confirmed the intention to end the legal requirement to self-isolate when the regulations expire on March 24 and said the Government may move that date forward.
  • The news comes as Covid infection levels are falling in most parts of the UK for the first time since early December.
  • Mr Johnson said: “Our scientists believe it is likely that the omicron wave has now peaked nationally.”
  • He added: “Because of the extraordinary booster campaign, together with the way the public have responded to the Plan B measures, we can return to Plan A in England and allow Plan B regulations to expire.”
  • Thousands of children have “fallen off the radar”, a government tsar has warned as she launches an inquiry to track down youngsters who are not in the classroom,  reports Camilla Turner.
  • School attendance has dropped in the wake of lockdown and is a major “red flag”, according to Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner for England.
  • Following two prolonged periods of school closures during national shutdowns, some youngsters have dropped off the school roll altogether, meaning they are not even captured by Department for Education (DfE) data.
