Joe Biden intends to mail out a half-billion COVID-19 tests, starting in January.

• “Today, Biden is announcing his Administration will purchase a half-billion at-home, rapid tests this winter to be distributed for free to Americans who want them, with the initial delivery starting in January 2022,” said the White House in a press statement.

• The White House also announced that it would add additional federal test sites across the United States, beginning with New York. Biden also pledged to use the Defense Production Act to produce the necessary number of COVID-19 tests for those in need.

• These decisions appear to reverse previous Biden administration positions on COVID-19 testing. On Dec. 6, White House press secretary Jen Psaki dismissed the notion of mailing test kits to nearly every home.

• The Biden administration also announced it would add more vaccination clinics on top of the 90,000 that have already been stood up in recent months, as well as deploy “hundreds of federal vaccinators across 12 states, Tribes and territories.”
