The bottom line is that the ship needs to be able to take a nearby explosion and continue to fight. Shock trials help ensure that is the case. 

US Navy confirmed the 1st shock test for carrier GERALD R FORD CVN78 took place Friday 18 June just over 100 miles off the Atlantic coast of Florida. The explosion registered magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale.
